Privacy & Youth Safety
A public troop website should make Scouting easier to find without making youth personal information easier to find.
Purpose of this website
This public unit website is intended to help adults and families learn about Troop 8 East Orange, its program, history, recruiting opportunities, and community presence without unnecessarily exposing youth information.
Minimum necessary youth information
The public website should use the minimum youth-identifying information necessary. Do not publish private rosters, youth phone numbers or email addresses, home addresses, schools, medical information, exact recurring youth locations, detailed travel or lodging plans, transportation details, or real-time whereabouts.
When celebrating youth achievements, avoid combining a youth's full name with location, schedule, school, personal social-media account, or other information that makes the youth easier to identify or locate.
Photos and video
Use identifiable youth photographs or video only when the permissions required by Scouting America, the chartered organization, applicable law, and troop/council procedures are in place. Avoid captions that unnecessarily identify youth. Do not tag youth personal social-media accounts from troop channels.
Contact forms and personal information
Public forms on this website are designed for adults, parents, and legal guardians. They intentionally do not request a youth's name, school, email address, phone number, home address, or other direct identifiers. Information submitted through the forms is intended only so designated adult Troop 8 volunteers can respond to the inquiry. Form submissions should be retained only as long as reasonably needed and should not be published.
Online communication and social media
Scouting America's safeguarding rules apply online. One-on-one adult/youth communication is prohibited. Unit social-media channels should be public, actively monitored, and administered by at least two authorized adults, with at least one administrator meeting Scouting America's current registered-volunteer/training expectations. Youth should not be contacted through private direct messages.
If a youth contacts a troop account, move the communication into a compliant channel by including a parent/guardian or another authorized adult rather than continuing a private one-to-one exchange.
Public calendar
Any calendar embedded on this site should be a separate public-facing calendar containing only information appropriate for the open web. Internal troop calendars, detailed itineraries, recurring youth locations, campsite or lodging details, transportation plans, and real-time location information should remain in protected troop systems.
Branding and trademarks
The site uses a Troop 8 text identity and does not alter or recreate official Scouting America marks. If leadership later adds an official Scouting America or Scouts BSA logo, it should use a current, unmodified asset obtained from the official Scouting America Brand Center and follow the applicable brand guidelines.
Advertising, sales, and fundraising
This site should not add commercial advertisements, affiliate endorsements, or unauthorized sales. Online fundraising, donation processing, or product sales should be added only after Troop 8 leadership confirms the proper Scouting, council, and chartered-organization approval process.
External links
This website may link to Scouting America, Northern New Jersey Council, and other leadership-approved resources. External sites have their own privacy and content policies.
Unit-site disclaimer
This is an independent Troop 8 East Orange unit website. It is not an official website or communication channel of Scouting America or Northern New Jersey Council. References to Scouts BSA and Scouting America identify the program and organization with which Troop 8 is affiliated.
